What is CNC turning?
CNC turning is a machining process used to create cylindrical parts by removing material from a workpiece. This process is often used for producing intricate and precise components, such as shafts, pins, and other cylindrical parts. CNC turning is a type of subtractive manufacturing, where the material is removed from a workpiece to achieve the desired shape and dimensions.
In CNC turning, a lathe machine is employed to rotate the workpiece while cutting tools are used to remove material from the rotating object. The CNC aspect refers to the use of computerized controls to manage and coordinate the movements of the cutting tools and the workpiece. This allows for precise and automated machining, ensuring high accuracy and consistency in the produced parts.
1.Computerized Controls
CNC turning relies on computerized controls to manage the machining operation. A programmed code dictates the movements and actions of the cutting tools and the workpiece.
2.Workpiece Mounting
The process begins by securing the raw material, known as the workpiece, into the lathe machine. The workpiece is usually a cylindrical object that will be shaped and cut during the turning process.
3.Rotational Movement
The lathe machine rotates the workpiece at high speeds. This rotation is controlled and precise, providing the necessary movement for the cutting tools to shape the material.
4.Cutting Tools
Specialized cutting tools, such as drills and blades, are employed to remove material from the rotating workpiece. These tools are precisely controlled in their movements by the CNC system.
5.Material Removal
As the cutting tools engage with the rotating workpiece, material is gradually removed, shaping the cylindrical part according to the programmed specifications.
6.Multi-Axis Control
CNC turning machines often feature multi-axis control, allowing for complex geometries and intricate details in the final product. This capability enhances the versatility and precision of the machining process.
7.Automated Precision
The CNC system ensures high precision and repeatability in the machining process. This level of automation reduces the likelihood of errors and contributes to the overall efficiency of production.
8.Quality Control
Throughout the CNC turning process, quality control measures may be implemented to ensure that the final product meets specified tolerances and surface finish requirements.
What kind of parts are suitable for CNC turning?
Compared with ordinary lathes, CNC lathes are more suitable for turning rotary parts with the following requirements and characteristics.
1. Parts with high precision requirements
2. Parts with small surface roughness value.
3. Parts with complex surface contour shapes.
4. Parts with special threads
Machining methods for CNC turning
CNC turning can be categorized into the following 4 types of machining:
1. Turning cylindrical
2. Turning bore
3. Turning end face
4. Turning threads
Turning Cylindrical
Turning the outer circle is the most common, the most basic turning method, Workpieces outer generally by the cylindrical surface, conical surface, arc surface rotary groove and other basic pieces of taper turning, can be regarded as a special form of inner circle, outer circle, respectively.
Turning Bore
Turning of internal holes refers to enlarging the holes of a workpiece or machining the internal surface of a hollow workpiece, and is one of the commonly used turning machining methods. When turning blind holes and step holes, the turning tool should be fed longitudinally first and then fed transversely when turning to the root of the hole and then fed from the outside to the center to turn the end face or step end face.
Turning End Face
Turning end face including step end face turning, offset tool turning end face. Use a larger amount of backdraft, this turning cutting smooth, smooth surface, and large and small end face can be.
Use a 90° left offset tool to turn the end face from outside to the center of the workpiece, suitable for machining end face with a small size.
Use 90°left offset tool to turn the end face from the center of the workpiece to the outward feed, suitable for machining the end face with a hole in the center of the workpiece.
The right offset tool is used to turn the end face with a higher strength of the tool head, which is suitable for turning larger end faces, especially the large end faces of castings and forgings.
Turning Threads
In general, only a small number of equal-pitch threads can be processed on ordinary lathes. On a CNC lathe, as long as the thread processing program is adjusted and the thread end point coordinate value and thread lead are pointed out, cylindrical threads, tapered threads or end face threads with different pitches can be turned. Thread turning can be performed by single-tool cutting or cycle cutting.
