What is CNC Milling?
CNC Milling is a highly automated machining method in which a computer program controls a milling machine to make cuts. In this process, the workpiece is held on a table while the tool is moved by a computer program along different axes to cut.
A CNC milling machine typically has three main axes: the X-axis, the Y-axis, and the Z-axis. The X-axis and the Y-axis control the movement of the tool in the horizontal plane, while the Z-axis controls the vertical movement of the tool. The tool can, therefore work at multiple angles, allowing the tool to create complex shapes and structures on the surface of the workpiece.
How does CNC milling work?
When it comes to CNC milling, it is done through the following steps:
1. CAD Modeling: A 3D model of the desired part is created using CAD software to define its dimensions and specifications.
2. CAM Programming: The CAD model is converted into a CNC program using the CAM software to provide the milling machine with specific instructions that tell the machine how to cut the material.
3. CNC Program Loading: Load the CNC program into the machine controller, a computer system that interprets and executes the CNC program.
4. Machine Preparation: The raw material is fixed on the milling machine to ensure it is secure and meets the design requirements.
5. Cutting process: The machine controller starts the milling machine and guides the cutting tool, usually a rotating milling cutter, along a precise path to cut the material layer by layer to form the final part shape, as instructed by the CNC program.
6. High Accuracy and Repeatability: CNC milling is known for its high accuracy and repeatability, ensuring consistent quality from part to part. In addition, the machine can perform multiple operations such as drilling, tapping and contouring in the same setup, increasing efficiency.
What are the cutting tools used in CNC milling?
CNC milling machines generally use milling cutters. A milling cutter has a cylindrical shape, and the circumference and the bottom have a cutting edge so that its rotary movement to cut the workpiece cutting tool.
The following types of milling cutters are generally available:
1.Cylindrical milling cutter
Used for machining flat surfaces on horizontal milling machines. The teeth of the cutter are distributed on the circumference of the milling cutter and are categorized into straight teeth and helical teeth according to the tooth shape. According to the number of teeth, they are coarse teeth and fine teeth. The spiral tooth roughing milling cutter tooth number is less. The cutter tooth strength is high. The tolerance space is ample and suitable for roughing; a fine-tooth milling cutter is ideal for finishing.
2. Face milling cutter
Used in vertical milling machines, face milling machines or gantry milling machines on the processing plane, end face and circumference of the cutter teeth, there are coarse and fine teeth. Its structure has a whole type, inlaid tooth type and indexable type 3 kinds.
3.End Mills
Used for machining grooves and step surfaces, the teeth are on the circumference and end face and cannot be fed along the axial direction when working. When there is an end tooth through the centre of the end mill, it can be provided axially.
4.Three-face milling cutter
Used for processing all kinds of grooves and step surfaces, with cutter teeth on both sides and the circumference.
5.Angle milling cutter
Used for milling grooves at a certain angle, there are two kinds of milling cutters: single-angle and double-angle milling cutters.
6. Saw blade milling cutter
Used for processing deep grooves and cutting off the workpiece, its circumference has more teeth. To reduce the friction during milling, there is a 15~1° sub-deviation angle on both sides of the cutter teeth. In addition, there are keyway milling cutters, dovetail slot milling cutters, T-slot milling cutters and various molding milling cutters.
7.T-shaped milling cutter
Used for milling T-slots.
