Titanium alloy is a combination of titanium and other chemical elements, typically designed to enhance specific properties for industrial applications. Titanium is known for its high strength, lightweight, and exceptional corrosion resistance. When alloyed with other elements such as aluminium, vanadium, nickel, and molybdenum, its properties can be significantly improved or tailored to specific needs.

Titanium alloy machining usually refers to the most commonly used type of titanium alloy, namely Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V). This alloy is widely used in various industrial fields due to its excellent properties, especially in aerospace and medical devices.

Characteristics of Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium alloy

High strength and lightweight

Ti-6Al-4V alloy is known for its high strength and lower density, which makes it ideal for applications that require weight reduction while maintaining strength.

Good corrosion resistance

This alloy exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in various environments, including resistance to seawater and some chemicals.

High-temperature performance

Ti-6Al-4V can still maintain good mechanical properties in high-temperature environments and is suitable for high-temperature applications.

Biocompatibility

Like other titanium alloys, Ti-6Al-4V is highly compatible with human tissue and is often used to manufacture medical implants.

Properties of Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) titanium alloy

Physical Properties
  1. Density: The density of Grade 5 titanium alloy is about 4.43 g/cm³, which makes it considerably lighter than many other metals.
  2. Melting Point: Its melting point is around 1,660°C (3,020°F), indicating excellent high-temperature resistance.
  3. Thermal Conductivity: This alloy has a relatively low thermal conductivity of about 6.7 W/m·K, meaning it is not a great conductor of heat.
  4. Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: At room temperature, the thermal expansion coefficient of Ti-6Al-4V is about 8.6 x 10^-6 /°C, indicating minimal expansion or contraction with temperature changes.
  5. Electrical Conductivity: As a non-ferrous metal, it has low electrical conductivity.

Mechanical Properties

  1. Tensile Strength: The tensile strength of Grade 5 titanium alloy typically ranges from 900 to 1,100 MPa, showing very high strength and toughness.
  2. Yield Strength: Its yield strength, the maximum stress before permanent deformation, is typically around 860 to 880 MPa.
  3. Elongation: This alloy has good elongation, generally between 10% and 15%, indicating it can undergo a certain degree of deformation before breaking.
  4. Hardness: Ti-6Al-4V has a hardness of around 36 HRC, indicating good resistance to wear and scratching.
  5. Fracture Toughness: As a high-strength alloy, it also has good fracture toughness, meaning it is less likely to crack under high impact or stress concentrations.
